What exactly a Piano is?

April 1st, 2009 by spiritr

Piano is a musical instrument played with a manual keyboard actuating hammers that strike wire strings, producing sounds that may be softened or sustained by means of pedals. The piano can be a percussion, string, or keyboard instrument.

The word piano is a shortened form of the word ‘pianoforte’, which is seldom used except in formal language and derived from the original Italian name for the instrument, (soft and loud).

There are 2 major modern pianos:-

Grand piano is the largest, most majestic and most expensive type of piano. The Length is approximately between 2.2 m and 3 m long.  A grand piano action has a repetition lever for each key. If the key is pressed repeatedly and fairly quickly this repetition lever catches the hammer close to the strings, which assists the speed and control of repeated notes and trills. It also comes in two smaller versions, the boudoir grand around 1.7 to 2.2 meters wide and the baby grand which less than six feet wide.

Upright piano is a more compact piano because the strings are placed vertically from the keyboard to the hammers.  The most common type of piano used at home.  Compared to grand piano, the hammers strike outward or horizontally, making it slower to return to resting position.  Modern pianos are used to be classified according to their height and, to modifications of the action that are necessary to accommodate the height.  For instances, Studio pianos, are around 42 to 45 inches tall. The shortest cabinet that can accommodate a ‘full-sized’ action located above the keyboard.  Console pianos have a compact action with shorter hammers, few inches shorter than studio models. Anything taller than a studio piano is called an upright.
